Play James Buster Douglas KO Boxing Online
Dodge punches, throw jabs and hooks, and work your way up the ranks in this classic boxing game featuring real boxers from 1990.
James Buster Douglas KO Boxing came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Taito. It was one of the earlier boxing games on the system, arriving before the more polished titles that would define the genre on 16-bit consoles. You get a roster of real boxers, including the man himself, and the game tries to capture the feel of a heavyweight bout with its large, somewhat stiff sprites.
You control a boxer from a side view, moving back and forth to dodge punches and position yourself for attacks. The main goal is to win matches by knockout or decision, working your way up the ranks. Signature mechanics include a power meter that builds as you land punches, letting you unleash a more powerful shot when it's full, and different punch types like jabs and hooks mapped to the buttons. The pacing is deliberate, almost sluggish, and the AI can be frustratingly defensive, making some fights a real grind. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to translate the sport's tension, where a single well-timed punch can turn everything around.
