Game Overview

Jim Lee's WildC.A.T.S - Covert Action Teams came out for the Super Nintendo in 1995, developed by Beam Software. It's a side-scrolling beat 'em up based on the comic series, and it fits right in with the kind of licensed action games that were common on the system at the time. You don't see it talked about much these days, but it had a certain style that made it stand out from the usual fare.

You control one of several team members, each with unique attacks and a super move, and you can switch between them on the fly during combat. The goal is to fight through levels full of enemies, mostly robotic grunts, and take down bosses. The main mechanics involve clearing screen after screen of foes, using character-specific combos, and managing your special meter for powerful attacks. It moves at a decent clip, though some sections feel repetitive, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly. Playing it feels like tapping directly into that mid-90s comic book energy, messy and over-the-top but full of personality.
