Play Karnov (Japan) Online

You play as a mustachioed Russian strongman who spits fire at floating skulls in clunky but oddly satisfying NES platforming. The music’s catchy, the jumps are unforgiving, and that ridiculous ‘stache makes every death feel worth it.

Game Overview

Karnov came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, developed and published by Data East. It was part of that wave of early NES games that felt a little rough around the edges but had a distinct personality all their own. You don't see many games starring a fire-breathing Russian strongman, even back then.

You control Karnov, a large man with an impressive mustache, moving screen by screen through a sidescrolling world. Your main goal is to defeat enemies and collect three pieces of a magical artifact to open the final door. Your primary weapon is a short-range fire breath attack, and you also find items like bombs and boomerangs to help against the various monsters and environmental hazards. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is quite high, with precise jumps and enemy patterns to learn. It feels like a challenging, slightly strange trip through a world that doesn't play by the usual rules.
