Karnov came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, published by Data East. It was a time when side-scrolling platformers were everywhere, and this one stood out not for polish but for its sheer oddness. You controlled a former circus strongman from the Soviet Union, which was about as bizarre a concept as you could get back then.
You guide Karnov through a series of fantasy levels, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to defeat enemies and find hidden items, like jewels and power-ups, to progress. Karnov can jump and use a short-range fire breath attack, which requires careful timing because it leaves you vulnerable. The game is notoriously difficult, with instant death pits and enemies that respawn quickly. Playing it feels like a constant, clumsy struggle against the game's own design.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
