Play Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Speed Version (Japan) Online
"Dial up monsters on a chunky '90s cellphone, battle at lightning speed, and try not to flinch when your drill-armed Denjuu evolves mid-fight. The whole thing feels like a glitchy, cyberpunk Pokémon dream."
Keitai Denjuu Telefang - Speed Version came out in 2000 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Smilesoft and published by Natsume. It was part of that wave of monster-collecting RPGs that followed Pokémon, but it had its own strange, techy charm, built around the era's fascination with early mobile phones.
You play as a kid who gets pulled into a digital world, controlling your character screen by screen as you explore fields, caves, and towns. Your main goal is to befriend creatures called Denjuu by battling them, then recruiting them to fight alongside you. The "Speed" in the title refers to faster combat and quicker evolution sequences; your monsters can transform during battle, sometimes unexpectedly. You also use an in-game cell phone to call your monsters into fights and manage your contacts. The pacing is brisk, and some boss fights demand quick tactical choices. Playing it feels like tapping into a secret, slightly janky frequency that most people missed.
