Kicks came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Spectrum Holobyte. It was one of those early platformers that felt right at home on a clunky keyboard, demanding quick reflexes and a lot of patience from players who were used to simpler arcade-style challenges.
You control a sneaker that has to navigate obstacle-filled courses, jumping from platform to platform while avoiding hazards like spikes and moving enemies. The main goal is to reach the end of each stage without falling or getting hit, which gets progressively harder as levels introduce more complex patterns and timing-based traps. The game relies heavily on precise jumps and quick reactions, with a difficulty that escalates sharply after the first few screens. It feels frantic and unforgiving, but landing a tricky series of jumps delivers a genuine rush of relief.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
