Kid Niki: Radical Ninja came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, developed by Irem. It was part of that wave of side-scrolling action games that filled the NES library, offering a colorful, slightly offbeat take on the ninja genre without trying to reinvent the wheel.
You control Kid Niki, a young ninja on a mission to rescue Princess Margo from the Stone Wizard. You move screen by screen through seven themed worlds, clearing each area of enemies before proceeding. Your primary weapon is a spinning sword attack, which you can also use to deflect certain projectiles. Finding bells hidden in blocks grants temporary power-ups; a golden bell lets you throw your sword like a projectile, while a silver bell makes you briefly invincible. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty is unforgiving, demanding precise jumps and quick reactions to enemy patterns. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble where every small victory is earned.
