King of Fighters '96 (J) came out for the Sega Saturn in 1996, developed and published by SNK. It was a time when 2D fighters still dominated the scene, and this port brought the arcade experience home with very little compromise. The Saturn version was known for its smooth animation and faithful recreation of the Neo Geo original, which was a big deal if you were into fighting games back then.
You control a team of three fighters, chosen from a large roster, and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main objective is to defeat all opposing teams and uncover the story behind the new tournament. Key mechanics include the ability to perform advanced dodges to evade attacks and build meter, and the introduction of super special moves that require precise inputs. The pacing is fast, and the AI can be brutally unforgiving, especially in later matches. It feels responsive and demanding, where every decision matters in a fight.
