King’s Quest V starts with what should be a peaceful walk—until Graham comes back to find his entire castle gone, vanished by some wizard. A talking owl named Cedric shows up (because of course he does) and drags you into this weird, dangerous world where everything wants to kill you. Scorpions, witches, cliffs—even the desert will dehydrate you to death if you’re not careful. Save often, or you’ll regret it.

The big deal here is the switch from typing commands to point-and-click. You’ve got icons for walking, poking at stuff, talking to random objects (again, classic King’s Quest), and a bag to hoard every vaguely useful item you find. The NES version cuts some corners—fewer colors, smaller areas, and no revisiting that first wizard’s house—but it’s still the same bizarre, punishing adventure. Just with less dying, apparently.

Honestly, half the fun is seeing how creatively you can mess up before reloading your last save.
