King’s Quest V starts with one of those classic adventure game setups—you’re King Graham, back from a nice walk, only to find your entire castle (and family) vanished. A talking owl named Cedric shows up and drops the bad news: an evil wizard named Mordack is behind it. So off you go to Serenia, where another wizard might help you get everything back.

The big deal here is that it’s Sierra’s first point-and-click adventure—no more typing "look at rock" or "push door." Instead, you’ve got icons for walking, examining stuff, grabbing things, and talking to… well, everything. Right-click cycles through them, which feels weirdly modern for an Amiga game. The inventory’s a bag you can rummage through, combining items or using them in the world. It’s smoother than typing, but don’t get too comfortable—this is still a Sierra game, meaning you’ll die. A lot. Scorpions, cliffs, witches, even thirst in the desert. Save often, or you’ll regret it.

The NES version cuts some corners—fewer colors, smaller areas, and puzzles with only one solution now. A few scenes are shorter or gone entirely, like not being able to backtrack to the first wizard’s house. They also toned down some of the deaths, probably to keep it kid-friendly. Still, it’s recognizably the same adventure, just a little leaner.

If you’ve got nostalgia for pixelated deserts and talking owls, this one’s worth revisiting—just keep that save button handy.
