Laura Bow 1: The Colonel's Bequest came out in 1989 from Sierra On-Line, one of their many MS-DOS adventure titles from that era. It stood out for its murder mystery setup, a departure from the fantasy and sci-fi themes common in other Sierra games of the time.
You control Laura Bow, a college student invited to a remote Louisiana island mansion for a family gathering that quickly turns sinister. Your goal is to uncover the truth behind a series of murders happening throughout the night. The game uses screen by screen exploration, timed events where characters follow independent schedules, and careful observation of conversations and environmental details. Missing a clue or failing to be in the right place at the right time can lock you out of important revelations. The pacing is deliberate, demanding patience and attention to small cues. Playing it feels like piecing together a tense, interactive novel where every choice matters.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
