LEGO Battles on the DS is basically a tiny RTS with that classic LEGO charm—you know, the kind where even the explosions look cute. You start off with a handful of little brick soldiers and workers, then scramble to build barracks, mine gold (or studs, because LEGO), and fend off attacks from pirates, knights, or aliens depending on the campaign. The controls take a second to get used to—you’re poking at the touchscreen to move units—but once it clicks, it’s weirdly satisfying to see your little plastic army swarm the enemy base.
What I didn’t expect? The campaigns actually have some decent variety. One minute you’re defending a castle with archers, the next you’re sending spaceships to zap alien UFOs. And yeah, it’s simple compared to PC RTS games, but that’s the point—it’s the perfect kind of strategy game for short bursts on the go. Just don’t be surprised when you catch yourself grinning at a battalion of LEGO skeletons marching into battle.
