Play LostMagic (Psyfer) Online
You draw messy runes to cast spells—screw up the symbol and your fireball fizzles, but nail it and you’re slinging lightning while your monster squad brawls. The janky charm’s in figuring out which scribbles summon what.

LostMagic, released by Taito in 2006 for the Nintendo DS, was one of those games that really tried to use the hardware in a direct way. It came out during that experimental phase on the DS where developers were still figuring out what the touch screen could do beyond just menus and maps. You play as a young boy named Isaac, a magic user on a quest to stop an ancient evil from destroying the world, which was a pretty standard setup, but the way you interacted with the world was anything but.
You control Isaac directly, moving him through villages and across an overworld map to various battlefields. The core of the game is real-time strategy mixed with spellcasting; you command a small army of monsters you've tamed while simultaneously drawing specific runes on the touch screen to cast spells. The main objective is to clear these battle screens by defeating enemy units and commanders. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you juggle unit commands with the pressure of drawing accurate runes mid-fight. Getting a spell wrong means wasting precious mana, but executing a complex symbol perfectly to unleash a massive attack is incredibly satisfying. It feels like a constant, chaotic balancing act between thinking like a general and reacting like a sorcerer.
