Luigi's Mansion came out for the GameCube in 2001, developed by Nintendo EAD. It was one of the system's early titles, a strange and moody departure from the usual Mario fare, where you explored a haunted house instead of stomping goombas in the sun.

You control Luigi, who must rescue Mario by clearing a massive, screen by screen mansion of ghosts. Your main tool is the Poltergust 3000, a modified vacuum cleaner you use to stun specters with your flashlight, then suck them up while fighting their pull. You also hunt for hidden treasure, solve environmental puzzles by interacting with the mansion's objects, and hunt for keys to unlock new rooms. The pacing is deliberate, almost cautious; you check every drawer, shine your light on every suspicious surface. It feels like cautiously unraveling a spooky, interactive mystery.
