M1 Tank Platoon came out on the Amiga in 1989 from MicroProse, a company well known for its detailed military simulations. It arrived during a time when complex, thoughtful strategy games were finding a solid audience on home computers, offering a level of realism that was pretty uncommon.
You command a platoon of four M1 Abrams tanks, managing each crew member's position and coordinating with supporting infantry and artillery. The main objective is to complete various missions against Warsaw Pact forces across a dynamic battlefield. Key mechanics include switching between an overhead tactical map to direct your entire platoon and taking direct control inside any tank to act as the driver, gunner, or commander. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is significant, demanding careful positioning and resource management. Successfully outmaneuvering an enemy tank column after a tense engagement provides a genuine sense of accomplishment.
