I first played M1 Tank Platoon back in 1989, when it came out on MS-DOS. It was developed and published by MicroProse Software, Inc., and it stood out among other military sims of the time for its depth and realism. This was an era when complex simulations were pushing the limits of what PCs could handle, and M1 Tank Platoon fit right into that ambitious category.

In the game, you command a platoon of four M1 Abrams tanks, managing everything from movement and targeting to calling in artillery and airstrikes. Your main objective is to complete missions by destroying enemy armor and securing objectives across varied terrain. Key mechanics include switching between an overhead tactical map for unit orders and a first-person view for manual gun control; you also monitor crew status and manage ammunition types. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is steep, demanding careful planning and quick adaptation to enemy movements. It feels tense and immersive, especially when you’re lining up a shot in first-person while your other tanks are under fire.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
