Combat Tanks is one of those MS-DOS classics that never had a big publisher name attached, but it found its way onto plenty of floppy disks in the early 90s. It was a straightforward arcade-style tank game that fit right in with the era's appetite for simple, competitive action. You didn't need a manual or a backstory; you just loaded it up and started blasting.
You control a small green tank viewed from above, moving through maze-like arenas filled with destructible walls and enemy tanks. Your main goal is to clear each screen of all opposing forces while protecting your base from being destroyed. Signature mechanics include ricocheting shots off metal walls to hit enemies around corners, and the strategic use of breakable barriers for cover or creating new paths. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty ramps up quickly as enemy tanks become more aggressive and numerous. It feels tense and immediate, especially when you're cornered with only one shell loaded.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
