Mad Planets came out in the arcades in 1983 from Gottlieb. It was part of that wave of early 80s games that tried to do something a little different with the space shooter formula, using a unique control scheme that felt distinct from its contemporaries.
You pilot a small ship around a central sun, using one joystick to rotate and another to thrust. Your goal is to destroy all the moons and satellites orbiting a planet before the planet itself goes "mad," breaking apart and sending homing chunks of rock after you. The core loop involves careful positioning to avoid the orbiting obstacles while you fire, followed by a frantic dash to safety when the planet explodes. The difficulty escalates quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and constant spatial awareness. It feels like a controlled panic, a tense dance on the edge of disaster.
