Magical Drop II came out in 1996 for arcades, a time when puzzle games were fighting for space next to the fighting and racing cabinets. Data East published it, and it stood out because it was so fast and looked so different from everything else. It didn't have the blocky, serious feel of a lot of puzzle games from that era; it was bright, loud, and almost frantic just to watch.
You control a small character at the bottom of the screen who grabs colored orbs from a descending stack and throws them back up. The goal is to clear the screen by making matches of three or more same-colored orbs before the stack reaches the bottom. The core mechanics involve grabbing orbs to build a column in your hand and then firing them to create chains; these chains are everything, as they cause huge combo reactions and send garbage orbs to your opponent in versus mode. The pacing is relentless, with the stack dropping faster after each clear, and the difficulty spikes sharply in the later single-player stages. It feels like a constant, tense race against a collapse you can see coming.
