Magician Lord came out in 1990 for the Neo Geo, published by SNK. It was one of the system's early titles, a side-scrolling action game that leaned into the hardware's ability to deliver detailed sprites and big, colorful stages. You play as Elta, a magician tasked with stopping an evil cult from resurrecting a dark god.

You control Elta through eight stages, moving screen by screen and clearing each area of enemies before proceeding. Your main weapon is a magic shot, but the core mechanic involves collecting six magical books to transform into one of eight different forms, like a fire-breathing dragon or a water-shooting warrior, each with unique attacks. The game is notoriously difficult, with aggressive enemies, instant-death pits, and limited continues. Success depends on memorizing enemy patterns and managing your transformations carefully.
