Play Magna Braban - Henreki no Yuusha (Japan) Online
You slash through enemies in real-time, dodging attacks while deciding whether to kill monsters or revive them to fight for you—all in this grimy, shadow-drenched SNES world.

Game Overview
Magna Braban: Henreki no Yuusha is one of those SNES RPGs that slipped under the radar outside Japan, which is a shame because it’s got this weird, moody vibe I love. You start off as your typical sword-wielding hero, but the combat’s faster than you’d expect—less turn-based, more slashing through enemies in real time while dodging their attacks. The pixel art’s got this grimy fantasy look, like someone took Ys and dipped it in shadow.
What hooked me was the Rebirth system. Instead of just killing monsters, you can revive them to fight alongside you. Sounds simple, but it changes how you approach battles—do you take out that skeleton now, or try to recruit it first? The dungeons are maze-like without being obnoxious, and there’s just enough story to keep you moving without drowning in text. It’s rough around the edges (the translation’s iffy if you’re not playing in Japanese), but there’s something charming about its ambition. If you’ve burned through the usual SNES RPGs and want something offbeat, give it a shot.
