Game Overview

Manic Miner on MS-DOS was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a release that bundled several early titles for the platform. The game was originally developed by Matthew Smith and published by Software Projects, bringing the ZX Spectrum hit to a new audience. It arrived during a time when platformers were often built around tight, screen-by-screen challenges rather than sprawling levels, and it fit right into that demanding, precise style of play.

You control Willy the Miner, a small character tasked with collecting keys across twenty caverns while avoiding enemies and environmental hazards. Each screen is a self-contained puzzle; you jump over moving enemies like bouncing skulls and avoid deadly creatures, all while managing a limited air supply. The controls require precision, and the timing on jumps feels strict, making even simple screens tense. Nailing a difficult cavern after several attempts brings a real sense of accomplishment, especially with the quirky, repetitive soundtrack pushing you forward. It’s a game that demands patience and rewards persistence with small, hard-won victories.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
