Game Overview

MechWar came out in 1992 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by MicroProse. It was one of those turn-based tactical games that felt right at home in an era when strategy titles were gaining complexity and depth, offering a more deliberate alternative to the action-heavy games of the time.

You command a single BattleMech, navigating hex-based maps and engaging enemy units in turn-based combat. Your main goal is to complete missions by destroying hostile forces while managing your mech's heat levels, weapons, and armor. Key mechanics include heat management, where firing too many weapons risks overheating and shutdown, and directional armor, meaning you must angle your mech to protect weakened sections. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be punishing if you act carelessly. It feels like a tense, calculated duel where every move carries weight.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
