Game Overview

Medarot 3 - Kuwagata Version is one of those weirdly specific Game Boy Color RPGs that somehow sticks with you. You start off as a kid getting your first Medarot—basically customizable battle robots—and immediately get sucked into this world where schoolyard rivalries are settled through tactical robot fights. The stag beetle designs (Kuwagata side!) have this chunky, satisfying pixel art that makes even menus fun to navigate.

What I didn’t expect was how much strategy goes into building your team. Swapping out arms for different attacks or sacrificing speed for armor actually matters, especially when terrain and positioning come into play. The writing’s got that goofy 90s anime vibe too—like your rival’s dramatic speeches about beetles being superior to rhinoceros beetles (yes, there’s a whole other Kabuto version with different robots, because Japan loved making us buy two copies).

It’s Pokémon if the battles were grid-based and your Pikachu had swappable missile launchers. I still think about my overpowered Kuwagata build from 2001 sometimes.
