Merlin came out for the Game Boy Color in 1994, developed and published by Titus Interactive. It was one of those early handheld platformers that tried to do something a little different, leaning into magic and fantasy at a time when many games were still figuring out what worked on the small screen.

You control Merlin himself, moving through side scrolling levels, using your staff to attack enemies and mixing potions to solve puzzles. The main goal is to progress through various magical worlds, defeating bosses and gathering items. The game features screen by screen exploration, simple combat with your staff, and light puzzle solving involving potion ingredients. It can feel a bit uneven in pacing, with some tricky jumps and surprisingly aggressive enemies. Playing it feels like a straightforward, sometimes clunky, but earnest attempt at a magical adventure.
