Metal Max 3 came out for the Nintendo DS in 2010, developed by Crea-Tech. It was part of a long running series of post apocalyptic RPGs that never quite got the attention of bigger franchises, but it had a dedicated following among players who liked open worlds and vehicle customization. On the DS, it fit right in with other deep, niche titles that didn't rely on flashy graphics.

You control a lone hunter in a desert wasteland, gathering parts to build and upgrade tanks from scrap. The main goal is to hunt bounties on monstrous creatures, but you spend just as much time exploring ruined cities and fighting bandits for their engines and armor plating. Combat happens in both on foot and inside your tank, with turn based attacks targeting specific enemy parts to disable them. The game is unforgiving; losing a fight often means your tank gets wrecked, and you have to trek back to a garage to repair it, assuming you have the money. Despite the grind, there's a real satisfaction in finally taking down a giant enemy that had been wiping you out just hours before.
