You control a boxer, either a custom fighter or Mike Tyson himself, moving around the ring and throwing punches with the face buttons. The main goal is to win matches by knocking out opponents or outscoring them on points. The pacing is fairly quick, with rounds that don't drag, but the difficulty can spike sharply against later opponents.
