Namco's Mobile Suit Gundam hit arcades in 1983, a time when vector graphics and simple sprites were the norm. It was a straightforward adaptation of the anime, letting you step into the cockpit of the RX-78-2 Gundam. The game didn't try to be anything more than a solid, playable version of the source material, fitting right in with other early 80s arcade shooters.
You control the Gundam from a side view, moving left and right to engage enemy Zakus and Doms. Your main objective is to survive each wave, using your beam rifle for ranged attacks and closing in with the beam saber for melee kills. The game progresses screen by screen, with each new area bringing more aggressive foes. The pacing is relentless; you're constantly dodging fire and timing your sword swings. It feels heavy and deliberate, like you're really piloting a massive machine, not just a nimble sprite.
