Game Overview

I picked up Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Battle Assault for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a time when the handheld was flooded with licensed anime games. This one was developed by Natsume and published by Bandai, and it felt like a solid attempt to bring the Seed universe's giant robot clashes into a portable format. It wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel, just deliver a decent fighting game you could play on the bus.

You control a mobile suit from the series, selecting pilots like Kira Yamato or Athrun Zala and their respective machines. The main objective is to deplete your opponent's health bar using a combination of melee combos, projectile beams, and super moves unique to each unit. Two key mechanics define the fights: a boost gauge for quick aerial dashes and evasions, and a separate super meter that builds as you land attacks or take damage, allowing for powerful finishing moves. The pacing is fast, with matches often decided by who manages their energy resources better, though the AI can feel punishingly cheap on higher difficulties. It feels satisfying to finally land that perfect combo after a string of failed attempts.
