Game Overview

Monster Bash came out in 1993 as part of the Apogee Software catalog, a familiar name for anyone digging through shareware disks in the early MS-DOS days. It was a side-scrolling platformer that didn't try to reinvent the wheel, just offered a solid, spooky-themed adventure right when those kinds of games were everywhere.

You control Johnny Dash, a kid armed with a slingshot, tasked with rescuing his kidnapped dog and a bunch of other pets from classic movie monsters. The game progresses screen by screen, with each area packed with enemies like mummies and vampires, along with environmental traps like spring-loaded couches and tricky jumps. You collect keys to open pet cages and gather power-ups, like a temporary broomstick that lets you fly over particularly nasty sections. The pacing is brisk, though some jumps demand precision and the later levels get genuinely tough. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes punishing, but always earnest challenge from that era.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
