Game Overview

I remember picking up Mortal Kombat for the Sega Master System back in 1993, developed by Probe Software. It was one of those late-era releases for the console, a time when the 16-bit machines were already taking over, but for those of us still on 8-bit, it was a big deal. Having Mortal Kombat at home, even in this scaled-down form, felt like a small victory.

You choose from a reduced roster of fighters, including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and battle through a series of one-on-one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent and ultimately face Shang Tsung. Signature mechanics include performing special moves, like Scorpion's spear or Sub-Zero's ice blast, though the inputs can be tricky on the SMS controller. Fatalities are present but simplified, requiring precise positioning and button combinations. The pacing is brisk, but the difficulty spikes sharply, especially in later fights where the AI reads your inputs. It feels rough compared to the arcade, but there's a raw, determined charm to making it work on the older hardware.
