Mother 2, known as Gyiyg no Gyakushuu in Japan, came out on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. It was developed by Ape and published by Nintendo. This game arrived late in the SNES lifecycle, when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do with both visuals and sound.
You control a small party of kids, exploring the world screen by screen, engaging in turn based battles with a unique rolling health meter. Your main goal is to stop an alien invasion, which involves traveling through surreal towns, fighting strange enemies, and collecting eight sacred locations to save the world. The pacing is deliberate, with a difficulty that encourages thoughtful strategy rather than quick reflexes. It feels like wandering through a lucid dream where anything can happen.
