Combat is turn-based, but with a unique rolling health meter that lets you act even as your HP drops, which can sometimes save you if you heal fast enough. Exploration is screen by screen, with no random encounters; you see enemies on the field and can avoid them if you're careful. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes meandering, with puzzles that rely on talking to the right person or using an item in a specific way. It feels like wandering through a strange, slightly off-kilter version of your own neighborhood, where the ordinary slowly gives way to the absurd.
