I picked up The Muppets on Game Boy Color back in 2000, a time when licensed games were everywhere and handheld screens were still pretty small. It was developed by NEC Interchannel, and honestly, it fit right in with that era's mix of ambition and limitations. You could tell they were trying to capture some of that Muppet magic, even on the tiny hardware.
You control Kermit and Animal, switching between them to solve puzzles and fight enemies across different time periods. Kermit uses a weak slap attack and can jump a bit higher, while Animal smashes obstacles and enemies with a powerful charge. The main goal is to rescue the other Muppets, who are scattered across themed levels like ancient Egypt and the Wild West. You explore screen by screen, defeat enemies, and collect items to progress. The pacing is uneven, with some frustrating jumps and awkward enemy patterns, but it has a goofy, chaotic feel that matches the show's humor. Playing it feels like a messy but earnest tribute to the characters.
