Game Overview

Musya on the SNES is one of those games that sticks with you—mostly because it’s equal parts gorgeous and terrifying. You play as this lone warrior slicing through yokai straight out of Japanese folklore, and the vibe is somewhere between a ghost story and a fever dream. The first level throws you into a moonlit village with these creepy, floating heads that cackle as they dive at you, and the music? Pure chills.

It’s not just about swinging a sword, though. You’ve got these weird, screen-filling bosses—like a giant demon baby that crawls toward you while spewing fire—and the controls are tight enough that when you die (and you will), it feels like your fault, not the game’s. The backgrounds are packed with little details, too: torches flicker, paper lanterns sway, and sometimes you’ll just stop to take in how unsettlingly pretty it all is before something lunges at you.

If you’re into retro action games with a dark twist, Musya’s worth digging up. Just don’t blame me when you start seeing those yokai in your sleep.
