Mutation Nation came out in 1992 as an arcade release from SNK, the same company behind the Neo Geo hardware. It was one of many side-scrolling beat 'em ups from that period, competing for attention and quarters alongside titles like Final Fight and Streets of Rage.
You control one of two high school students, Johnny or Ray, fighting through waves of mutated creatures across a city in chaos. The main objective is to clear each screen of enemies before moving forward, eventually confronting a bizarre boss at the end of each stage. Signature mechanics include a super attack that drains your health bar but clears nearby foes, and the ability to pick up and throw certain enemies or objects. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can feel punishing if you don't manage your special moves carefully. It feels like a frantic, slightly unhinged brawl where every punch and kick has weight.
