I picked up Mysterious Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on the Nintendo DS back in 2006, developed by Chunsoft. It was part of that wave of deep, portable games that really used the dual screens well, showing your stats and map while you focused on the action. It never got the same attention as some other DS titles, but it had a dedicated following for good reason.

You control Shiren, a wandering samurai, and your goal is to reach the end of the randomly generated dungeons, fighting monsters and gathering gear along the way. The combat is turn-based; every step or action you take lets the enemies move too, so positioning and item management are everything. If you die, you lose all your items and levels, sent right back to the starting town, which makes every decision feel heavy. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, because rushing gets you killed. It feels like a constant test of your patience and adaptability.
