NBA: 3 on 3 for the Game Boy Color came out in 2000, published by Konami. It was one of the few basketball titles on the handheld, offering a stripped down, arcade style alternative to the console experiences of its time. The game focuses on three on three streetball rather than full court simulation, which fit the portable format well.
You control a team of three NBA players, passing and shooting to score baskets against another trio. The main objective is to win each game by outscoring the opponent within the time limit. Signature mechanics include performing special dunks by holding the shoot button, stealing the ball with well timed button presses, and calling for picks to create space. The pace is quick, with matches that rarely drag, though the AI can be challenging on higher settings. It feels fast and responsive, capturing the energy of pickup basketball in short bursts.
