I first played Nectaris on MS-DOS back in 1989, a time when strategy games were just starting to find their footing on the platform. It was developed by Hudson Soft, and it stood out for its clean, methodical approach to turn-based warfare. While other games were pushing for flashier graphics or faster action, Nectaris offered something more deliberate, a kind of chess match played out with military units on alien terrain.
You command an army of ground and air units, moving them one by one across hexagonal maps to capture enemy bases. The main goal is to seize all headquarters on each screen, but the real challenge comes from managing your limited resources and anticipating the computer's counterattacks. Signature mechanics include capturing factories to produce new units each turn and using terrain elevation for defensive advantages. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, with difficulty that escalates sharply if you overextend your forces. It feels like solving a complex, hostile puzzle where every decision has lasting consequences.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
