I picked up Need for Speed: Most Wanted on the Nintendo DS back in 2005, a handheld version of the bigger console game from Electronic Arts. It was one of those early DS racers that tried to bring a full arcade experience to the small screen, with cops and racers all crammed into the system's limited 3D capabilities. It felt ambitious for its time, even if it didn't always run perfectly.

You play as a street racer trying to climb the Blacklist by beating fifteen rival drivers in one-on-one races and police pursuits. The main goal is to earn enough bounty from evading cops and winning events to challenge each rival, eventually taking their car and moving up the ranks. Key mechanics include using nitrous for sudden bursts of speed, managing heat levels that determine how aggressively police pursue you, and customizing your car's performance parts between events. The pacing is intense during chases but allows for strategy in car upgrades; it can get difficult when multiple police units swarm you. Driving fast while watching for roadblocks and spike strips makes every escape feel like a narrow victory.
