Game Overview

NES Open Tournament Golf came out in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Nintendo. It was one of the later sports titles on the console, arriving at a time when many players were already looking ahead to the Super Nintendo, but it offered a polished and surprisingly deep golf experience that stood out on the 8-bit hardware.

You control either Mario or Luigi as you compete in tournaments across several international courses. The main objective is to win cups by posting the lowest score in stroke play or by beating opponents head-to-head in match play. Signature mechanics include a three-click swing system for power and accuracy, adjusting for wind speed and direction before each shot, and reading the green's subtle slopes for putts. The game moves at a deliberate pace, demanding focus on every hole, and the difficulty ramps up considerably on later courses. It feels satisfying to sink a long putt or drive the green on a par four after carefully judging all the conditions.
