NetHack came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by The NetHack DevTeam. It was a product of its time, a text-based dungeon crawler that ran on hardware most people would now consider primitive, yet it offered a depth that few games from that era could match.
You control an adventurer descending through increasingly dangerous dungeon levels, fighting monsters, gathering gear, and trying to retrieve the Amulet of Yendor. The game is known for its intricate interaction system; you can dip items into potions, engrave messages on the floor with wands, or even polymorph into a different creature. Every action has potential consequences, and the game is notoriously difficult, with permanent death forcing you to learn from countless mistakes. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a deeply layered, unforgiving puzzle where every run teaches you something new.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
