Game Overview

NFL Football on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1993 from Konami. It was one of the many football games trying to find its place on the console, competing with titles like Tecmo Super Bowl and John Madden Football. The graphics were standard for the time, with large, somewhat blocky players and a top-down view of the field that scrolled smoothly as you moved the ball.

You control the entire team, selecting plays from a menu before each snap. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by moving the ball downfield, either running it with your halfback or passing to your receivers. Two mechanics stand out: the ability to dive for extra yards as a runner, sacrificing your player to a big hit, and a passing system where you must lead your receiver with the d-pad to complete throws. The game moves at a quick pace, and the computer defense can be punishing if you make a predictable call. It feels like a straightforward, sometimes brutal, game of football where every first down is a small victory.
