NHL '97 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System came out in 1996, developed by EA Sports. It was one of the later hockey titles on the SNES, arriving as the system was nearing the end of its lifespan. The game tried to push the hardware a bit further, even if it still had that classic 16-bit look and feel.
You control a team of hockey players, moving them up and down the ice to score goals and defend your net. The main objective is to win games through passing, shooting, and checking. Signature mechanics include the ability to execute one-timers with better timing than earlier entries, and a more responsive checking system that lets you deliver solid body checks along the boards. The pacing is fairly quick, though the AI can be inconsistent, making some matches feel easier than others. It feels like a solid, slightly polished upgrade from the previous year's game.
