Man, NHL '97 on SNES takes me back—the pixelated jerseys, the chunky sound effects when you slam someone into the boards, that weirdly satisfying clack of a slap shot. It’s not fancy by today’s standards, but the gameplay’s so smooth you forget about graphics after five minutes. Passing feels crisp, and the goalies actually react like real humans (sometimes).
What I love is how chaotic it gets in multiplayer—my buddy always picks the Red Wings just to abuse Fedorov’s speed, while I’m over here trying not to get penalized for boarding everyone. The AI’s not genius-level, but on harder difficulties, they’ll sneak breakaways if you’re not careful. And yeah, the rosters are hilariously outdated now, but that’s half the charm. Still the best hockey fix for SNES, hands down.
