Play Number Munchers Online
Guide your little Muncher across a grid, munching numbers that fit the rules while dodging pesky Troggles in this classic educational game.
I first played Number Munchers on a school computer around 1990, part of a collection of MS-DOS classic games from MECC. It was one of those educational titles that didn't feel like a chore, fitting right in with the era's simple, focused software. You'd load it up and be greeted by a grid of numbers, a stark but effective setup that promised more than just math drills.
You control a little green Muncher, moving it tile by tile across a grid to eat numbers that match the current rule, like multiples of three or prime numbers. The main goal is to clear each screen by munching all correct answers while avoiding the Troggles, monsters that patrol the grid and will end your turn if they catch you. The game progresses screen by screen, with the rules and grid layouts changing to keep you alert; the pacing is steady, but the difficulty ramps up as you advance, demanding quicker decisions. It feels surprisingly tense for a math game, a mix of focus and genuine pressure when a Troggle gets close.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
