You guide a blocky dude through a shifting maze where every move could backfire—floor vanishes, eyeballs chase you, and the solution’s usually the last thing you’d try. That creepy carnival soundtrack doesn’t help.

One Step Beyond came out in 1993 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a time when puzzle games were often unforgiving and abstract. It was developed by a small team, and it fits right in with that era's experimental, sometimes frustrating, approach to game design.
You control a simple character through a series of grid-based rooms, each one a self-contained puzzle where the goal is simply to reach the exit. The core mechanics involve careful movement; every step you take can trigger floor tiles to disappear, spawn enemies, or rearrange the layout, forcing you to think several moves ahead. The pacing is deliberate, almost tense, as a single wrong move can force a restart, and the difficulty ramps up quickly with later stages demanding near-perfect execution. It feels like a constant battle against your own assumptions, where success comes only after repeated failure and observation.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
