Play Operation Neptune Online

Pilot a tiny sub through underwater caves, solving quick math problems to dodge mines and crack open hatches—somehow makes fractions feel like part of the adventure. That chunky 90s ocean palette and the little "ding!" when you get an answer right just hits different.

Game Overview

Operation Neptune came out in 1991 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by John W. Ratcliff and published by The Learning Company. It was a product of its time, a game that tried to blend educational math drills with the kind of underwater exploration theme that was popular on home computers back then. You didn't see many games trying to make algebra part of a submarine adventure.

You control a small submarine, navigating through a side scrolling underwater world filled with mines, hostile sea creatures, and locked hatches. Your main goal is to reach the ocean floor to recover pieces of a crashed space capsule. The signature mechanics involve solving math problems to progress; you answer equations to disarm mines blocking your path or to unlock doors to new areas. The pacing is methodical, often interrupted by these mandatory quizzes, and the difficulty comes from both the navigation hazards and the increasing complexity of the math. It feels like a very earnest attempt to make homework feel like a treasure hunt.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
