Play Orbiter Online
Pilot a spacecraft, manage engines and thrusters, navigate the solar system, and complete missions like docking and orbiting in this detailed space flight simulator.
Orbiter came out in 2000 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, developed by Martin Schweiger. It was a space flight simulator for a niche audience, arriving at a time when most games were moving toward 3D action and simpler controls. You didn't play it for a story or to beat levels; you played it to learn orbital mechanics.
You control a spacecraft, managing its orientation, main engines, and attitude thrusters to navigate the solar system. The main objective is to complete missions like reaching orbit, transferring to another planet, or performing a precise docking with a space station. Signature mechanics include planning burns using the prograde and retrograde markers on the orbital HUD and manually aligning your ship with external camera views to execute delicate maneuvers. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with long stretches of time acceleration punctuated by moments of intense focus. It feels less like playing a game and more like operating a complex machine, where success brings a deep sense of accomplishment.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
