Out Run 3-D came out for the Sega Master System in 1989, published by Sega. It was one of the few SMS titles that tried to bring a true 3D effect to the home console, using those classic red and blue anaglyph glasses. At the time, it felt like a novelty, a way to squeeze a little more life out of the hardware before the 16-bit era really took over.
You control the driver of a sports car, weaving through traffic and choosing your route at forks in the road. The main goal is to reach the next checkpoint before time runs out, with branching paths leading to different endings. Signature mechanics include the forced-perspective 3D effect, which adds a surprising sense of depth to the scenery, and the ability to select your own soundtrack from three radio stations. The pacing is fast, and the handling is slippery, making tight turns a real challenge. It feels like a simplified but earnest attempt to bring arcade-style racing into your living room with a visual twist.
